Solicitors and students team up to host mock employment tribunal

Leading legal firm Aaron and Partners hosted a mock employment tribunal in partnership with Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Wirral Met College

The event, held at Birkenhead Town Hall, gave Wirral business owners and HR representatives an insight into what actually happens at an Employment Tribunal.

A group of leading solicitors, college students, and local business leaders teamed up to provide Wirral businesses with an insight into how the employment tribunal process works.

Law firm Aaron and Partners invited Wirral Met College students to play the role of claimant and respondent witnesses at the mock tribunal, held at Birkenhead Town Hall, with students from the college’s media department also filming the proceedings.

Delegates from various businesses across the Wirral attended to find out what to expect if they were to defend an employment claim. The event, supported by the Wirral Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of good HR processes including workplace policies and holding formal meetings.

Paul Hennity, Employment Law Solicitor from Aaron & Partners, hosted the session, with the firm’s Head of Employment Law, Helen Watson, acting on the judging panel alongside Paula Basnett, CEO of Wirral Chamber of Commerce, and Steven Scott, HR Business Partner from The Sovini Group.

“We’re pleased to have had a really positive response to the event, with a strong turnout from Wirral businesses wanting to know more about how employment tribunals work, and more importantly how to defend one,” said Paul.

“As we held the event in Birkenhead, Wirral Met College and the Wirral Chamber of Commerce were a clear choice as our key partners for the day and helped make it a great success.”

Sue Higginson, Principal of Wirral Met College, said: “We’re delighted to have worked with Aaron & Partners to support this project, which provided our students with an excellent opportunity to both learn and contribute to this exciting initiative.”

Paula Basnett, CEO of Wirral Chamber of Commerce added: “We’re really pleased to have helped Aaron and Partners bring a highly informative experience to local Wirral businesses.

“It’s the sort of thing that most business owners won’t have experienced in person and is invaluable in terms of knowing what’s involved. As an accredited Chamber of Commerce, we recognise the importance of managing people effectively and in line with legislation.

“A key part of our membership offer includes 24/7 HR and legal advice to help our members avoid these situations. However, should employers find they are taken to tribunal, it’s events like this that help them to best prepare and improve the chances of a successful outcome.”

Chester-based Aaron and Partners regularly hold events and workshops to boost businesses’ awareness of HR topics, such as dealing with grievances effectively, managing sickness absence, disciplinary procedures and social media in employment law.

Other upcoming events hosted by the law firm include a an IR35 Master Class on 14th January 2020 and the return of their employment law roadshows across the Wirral, Chester, North Wales and Shrewsbury in March 2020.
