Wirral’s new mayor has taken up his chains of office for the year 2022-23.
Cllr Jeff Green was formally elected at the council’s Annual General Meeting Part I at Wallasey Town Hall on Wednesday May 18. He takes over from Cllr George Davies who served as mayor from May 2021-2022.
Cllr Green was first elected to Wirral Council in 1986 as a member for Thurstaston Ward and, following boundary changes in 2004, he was again elected for the West Kirby and Thurstaston Ward which includes Caldy, Grange and Newton.
He was the Leader of the Council in 2010-2011 and in 2012 in addition to taking on numerous other responsibilities for Wirral Council and the community including, Executive Member for Highways, Chairman of the Council’s Audit and Risk Management Committee, Chairman of the Wirral West Constituency Committee, Chairman of the Hilbre Island Management Committee and Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Enterprise and Development Committee for Magenta Living.
A lifelong resident of Wirral, after leaving Hoylake Parade Secondary Modern Cllr Green attended night school and day release at Withens Lane Technical College, Birkenhead Technical College and Chester College of Further Education. In 1985 he joined the Driver Vehicle and Standards Agency as a Vehicle Examiner and subsequently rose to become Head of Programme, Project and Change Management for the Agency.
The Mayoress of Wirral is Carol Green who married Jeff Green in 1988. They have two daughters, Emma and Megan. Carol is a retired teacher who taught in Wirral for 37 years, teaching at Park Primary School and Mendell Primary School before taking up the Deputy Head post at Brackenwood Infant School in 1993. Carol was appointed Headteacher of Brackenwood Infant School in 1999 and led the school through three OFSTED inspections, on each occasion the school was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Inspectors.
Cllr Green announced Mayor and Mayoress will support and raise funds for:
Maggie’s Wirral, a cancer caring centre based on the grounds of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, one of the largest cancer hospitals in the UK.
The aim of Maggie’s is to be everyone’s home of cancer care, with the vision that nobody should “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying” when diagnosed with cancer.
IncuBabies, which was formed by a group of volunteers based in Wirral. The aim of the Charity is to raise funds for the Neo Natal Unit at Arrowe Park Women and Childrens’ Hospital to extend and refurbish the unit into a state of the art facility fit for the 21st Century and to enhance the support given to the parents/carers of the babies. IncuBabies is a completely volunteer run Charity.
The Mayor’s Special Charity Fund will also make contributions to other Wirral-based charities and voluntary groups at the end of the Mayoral year.
The new deputy Mayor, Bebington councillor Jerry Williams, was also elected at the meeting held in Wallasey town hall’s Civic Hall.
